An Expansion Tank is membrane pressurization equipment that absorbs the volume increase caused by water heating in closed-circuit installations. Thanks to the flexible membrane, expanding water is stored in the tank; system pressure is kept within safe limits and remains under control before the safety valve operates.
In a closed circuit, water expands as it heats; this pressure rise can damage pipes, valves, and equipment. The expansion tank absorbs excess water and returns it to the system during cooling. Incorrectly sized tanks lead to frequent safety discharges and system faults.
Total system water volume, minimum and maximum operating temperature, and static height difference are taken into account. Pre-charge pressure is typically set as static pressure + 0.3 bar. The Tanpera engineering team calculates the appropriate tank volume and pre-charge from your project data.
Used in central heating, fan-coil and radiator circuits, chiller cooling lines, solar collector circuits, and industrial closed installations. A standard solution for medium and small building installations.
Because the membrane is exposed to pressure fluctuations, periodic pre-charge checks are recommended. An annual general inspection and safety valve test should be performed. When the membrane wears, the tank becomes ineffective; timely replacement is important for system safety.
On large-volume installations, with high static height difference, or on projects with rapid pressure changes, a pumped expansion unit (NOVA) gives more stable results. For medium-scale buildings, a membrane tank is often sufficient.
