Dry Cooler
Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers
When ambient temperature is low it runs instead of the chiller, or as pre-cooling, and takes part or all of the load to save electricity. For the evaporator in the refrigeration cycle see the evaporator .

Why a dry cooler?
Free cooling

Highlights
- Water savings compared with open and hybrid towers.
- Electricity savings of up to 50% with EC fans versus AC fans.
- Automation and straightforward installation.
- Epoxy-coated or uncoated aluminium fins.
- Copper tubes passing between the fins, plus fans.
- Each EC fan drive can reduce fan speed to 1 rpm.

Frequently Asked Questions
A system that cools process water with ambient air. It can cool to 5 °C above ambient temperature.
It uses far less water than open or hybrid towers. Cooling water stays in a closed circuit, so it does not foul and maintenance costs stay lower.
Wet and adiabatic coolers contact air with water, saturate the air and lower its temperature so water can be cooled further. A dry cooler works with ambient air and a closed water circuit.
The dry cooler is connected in series with the chiller. When ambient temperature is low it runs instead of the chiller, or as pre-cooling, and takes part or all of the load.
EC fans are normally used instead of AC fans. Each fan drive can reduce speed to 1 rpm. At low ambient temperature the drives slow the fans, giving up to 50% electricity savings versus AC fans.
Epoxy-coated or uncoated aluminium fins, copper tubes passing between the fins, and fans. Tube material and wall thickness are calculated for the process and the site.
